Day 156 – Altiplanos continued…

Sunrise over salar de UyuniOn day two of our tour we went to a range of lagoons. Many of them uniquely colored by heavy metal minerals in the waters. The ever present Llamas and Flamencos included. We went on to pass volcanoes, some extinguished while others almost peacefully blow out some steam. The area up here is simply fantastic and gives one a real feeling of remoteness. We slept at a hotel made of salt blocks overlooking the fast salt lake below, a fantastic site!

This feeling was enhanced further when we went on the third day to the largest salt lake in the country. This 12000 square meters large flat and shiny white salt lake seems to touch the horizon.

High plains of Bolivia´s south; Colorado salarThe mountains in the far distance not actually being outside of the lake but being islands penetrating the white surface. Finally we also got to hug the huge cacti, of which some are more than one thousand years old.

In Uyuni we visited a locomotive graveyard and spend the day with strolling through the town. Thanks to the fact that it was Friday there was some band playing live music erratically. After sunset we took the bus to La Paz over night, heading towards new adventures…
